Those of us living in the Mother Lode know the routine. Early morning flight out of SFO requires you drive to San Francisco the night before, (“park and fly”), or get up real early for the departure. Lately, we choose the latter. We sleep the same amount leaving late the night before or early the morning of, why not spent the few short sleeping hours at home. So….a 1:00am departure for SFO. No traffic, and no parking at the hotel at 4:00am where the car will be parked while we are gone. I block the airport shuttle. Its not moving until they find a parking space for me. Finally the shuttle driver moves HIS car so we can squeeze into the huge, full parking lot!
One perk of 29 years of buying dental supplies and paying lab bills; access to an airline lounge when flying American Airlines. Fewer people, cleaner bathrooms and you can leave your stuff on your seat while you use the bathroom or grab food. Lounges have coffee, sesame sticks and apples, not the 5-course buffets they have in Asian lounges. We suffer. A five hour flight to JFK, two hour layover and gnash and stash more lounge food, then an seven hour flight to Barcelona.
Surprisingly tolerable flight to Barcelona. And older 767, no individual entertainment centers, just faded flatscreens scattered about. Two box meals, fitful sleep, a non stop crier 4 rows back. Typical flight, I guess. Got the rental car and we are off!!
