Day 3 Driving to Figueres and Salvador Dali

Long day yesterday, didn’t get to bed till 2am!  We always get the Metro system nailed about the time we leave.  A great way to get around in big cities, but with a learning curve.  Headed north two hours to Figueres.  For you Salvador Dali (!) fans, this is where he hung out most of his life till his death in 1989 at the age of 85.  Antoni Gaudi, who we met yesterday, changed architecture with Modernism, Dali forever changed and challenged art with Surrealism.  Another comparison:  Gaudi said that “Nature is God’s book that never closes”. Dali, when asked if he was on drugs, said, “I am the drug….take me!”.  Onward.

He helped design this gallery/museum. He is primarily known for his crazy paintings, (see below), but we also discovered that he was equally talented in film making, photography, incredible jewelry for the rich and famous (!), and optical-illusion art.  Sculpture/3D art (the best example is at the entrance where an old car is parked, if you put in one Euro, it will rain inside of the car!).  His most famous and valuable work is not here, but an incredibly eclectic sample of the work of a mad genius.  A few examples below.

This is his famous Lincoln Portrait, it is about 20 feet tall.  Depending on where you stand you either see Lincoln, or the rear end of his wife and muse, Gala. (This is the Gala angle)

Some of his gold work, much was jewelry.  Some was sold to those who could afford it, most was made just to be kept and admired.

This is a tapestry of his most famous work, The Persistence of Time

This is a huge ceiling piece.  His take on the Sistine Chapel.  I don’t want to explain it.

Another example of his optical-illusion art.  At 2 meters you will see three lions disguised as a Chinese, and at 6 meters, they form the head of a Royal Tiger.  You need training wheels for a lot of his art.
